Frozen Crush - Ultimate Italian Ice, Northridge

Sorry shaved ice, but I've found another cold treat, Frozen Crush is its name and Italian ice it its thing. Lemon, coconut, mango, and pumpkin pie with yogurt are a few of my favorite flavors. Cool, refreshing and light: exactly what I need after a heavy meal.

Frozen Crush is nestled between Pinkberry and what used to be a Korean restaurant on a busy strip of Tampa Ave. If you shop at the Northridge Costco, then you are just a few steps away from this Italian ice shop. There are always 16 flavors available every day and some of the flavors change periodically. The best part is, every flavor can be mixed with vanilla yogurt, which gives the Italian ice a smooth and creamy consistency.

To the left of the shop is a wall covered in graffiti artwork by Artistic Persuasion. There is also a video game machine with over 30 games including PacMan and a TV with Xbox 360 hooked up. You can enjoy your Italian ice and have some fun all at the same time.

The Italian ice is available in five sizes and some people order a quart to take home. Since the ice is kept at 18 degrees in the shop, it is a lot warmer than freezers at home. Be paitent when you pull it out of the freezer because it has to sit for a few minutes before you can dig in.

Overall, I enjoyed the Italian ice at Frozen Crush. Since I've never had it before, I don't have anything to compare it to, but I know what I did taste was very good. With the exception of a few icy chunks, the texture was smooth and the ice melted right in my mouth. I might just skip the pumpkin pie this year and go for a pumpkin ice with yogurt. Be sure to check Twitter for promotions and flavor swaps such as horchata and sour grape. (UPDATE: Frozen Crush is now mobile only, the store front in Northridge has closed - 2012)
